Our Story
Our Roots: How It All Began
In August 1951, Hielke and Teerje Vanderveen moved to a farm in Surrey, BC, Canada, where they started off living a modest existence in a chicken coop. Each day began with milking cows on the farm before heading to work in New West, digging peat. Over the next few years, they made connections with farmers in the area. In 1956, Hielke began hauling hay from farm to farm using a pickup truck. Eventually, Hielke was able to purchase a larger, 5-ton truck. H. Vanderveen & Sons was officially born.In 1964, Hielke purchased the land that the business operates on to this day. The house and shop are part of the original property, and the pole barn was constructed in 1969.
2nd Generation
Hielke stepped aside in 1967, and his son, Gary, took over and rebranded the company as Vanderveen Hay Sales LTD. With the help of the original feed store operator, Teerje, Vanderveen sold potatoes and hay to the local community. Gary began importing Alfalfa from Eastern Washington, catering to farmers looking for a high-protein feed, helping to solidify Vanderveen’s reputation as a supplier focused on quality and supporting local. In 1979, Gary sold the business to his brothers, Ted and John. Ted eventually moved on in 1981, but John stayed on, operating the business until 2014, when his sons, Jon, Jason, and James, took over.
3rd Generation
The third generation of Vanderveen’s operated the business together until 2020, when brother James moved on. Jon and Jason continue to proudly operate the business to this day.While upholding tradition is important to us, we continue to evolve to meet the growing needs of our clients. In 2022, the feed store underwent renovations and expanded to allow for more retail space. In addition to hay sales, we now offer pet food and supplies, making us your neighbourhood source for all your animals, big and small.Though the neighbourhood grows around us, our community knows they can count on us to stay. We are steadfast in our commitment to provide quality products and the friendly, knowledgeable service you’ve come to expect from Vanderveen.
Cultivating Community
Our family has been selling hay to local farmers–and now pet food and supplies to families in the Lower Mainland–since 1967. In this time, we’ve watched the community change and grow around us, and while our business has certainly evolved, we’ve stayed rooted to our home here in Surrey.When we say Vanderveen Hay and Pet Supply is a generational, family-owned business, we don’t just mean our family. It’s the generations of families who have come to work alongside ours. The generations of clients whose families have purchased from ours year after year. This is Vanderveen. This is our community. And community takes care of each other, which is why we are just as committed as ever to provide ours with the best quality of hay, pet food, and supplies at affordable prices.
